The latest issue of Breathe Magazine (Issue 81) is out, and there’s a very cool article in it about fanfiction! I was lucky to be interviewed by the writer, Jade Beecroft, along with other fanfiction writers about the topic. “Join the fan club” takes a look at how writing fanfiction can sharpen your writing skills, and I couldn’t agree more. As many of you know, I started my writing career with a whopping 70 fanfiction stories and loved every minute of it. It’s how I went from being Susan to Suki.
From the article:
“Susan says that writing fanfiction helped kickstart her career. ‘I was a timid new writer when I discovered fan fiction,’ she explains. ‘The anonymity appealed to me, and seeing other not-so-perfect writers sharing sharing their work gave me the confidence to go for it.'”
And here’s my last quote (and the last line from the article too):
“I wouldn’t be a published author without my fan-fiction community. I still value those friendships greatly.”
Yay for fanfiction! And thank you to Breathe Magazine and Jade Beecroft for recognizing its importance in the literary world–something many of us already knew.
